Interview

1. Tell us a little about yourself and how did you get into Illustration/Graphic Design?

I was born into a creative clan in Pasadena, California, May 4, 1982. Along with being an art director with Ogilvy & Mather Advertising, my Mother is an amazing children’s book illustrator with over 200 books to her credit.

My father is an award-winning copywriter and founder of Big Honkin’ Ideas, a 20-year-old advertising agency in Santa Monica. It’s safe to say I knew I wanted to do something creative when I grew up. But since the Batman gig was already taken I took to art and design.

2. When did you start freelancing and how do you like it compared to industry work?

In December 2010, I graduated at the top of my class from Full Sail University in Winter Park, Florida with a degree in graphic design. I’ve worked professionally with Big Honkin’ Ideas since 2010 creating a wide range of projects. These include identities, logos, web design, print ads, PowerPoint, Flash banners and brochures.

When I’m not working I’m usually painting, researching artists and designers for inspiration for my next project, or exhibiting at art walks. In 2009, I started an artist collective called BLK SHEEP MVMNT that showcases my fine art and supplements my commercial work.

I really enjoy working for myself and choosing projects that speak to me rather then corporate work. It is stressful but way more rewarding.

3. Walk us through a typical day

Up at 7. Take the dogs to the park for a couple hours. Then I feed them and myself and check my emails. Working freelance, it’s important that I keep in constant contact with my clients for their needs may have changed. Not really sure how long per day I work. It’s easy to lose track of time when I’m in front of the computer. I always do a bunch of sketches before I go digital and make sure clients like it and sign off before I spend time digitally. Communication is key. And try to sneak some painting in if I have time. Always doing something. I love staying busy.

4. Describe your design aesthetic and where do you draw your inspiration?

Everywhere and Everyone. I think it just depends how you look at things. I see the world through typography, art, and design. I believe it’s important to try and learn and get inspired by everything around me.

Even if I don’t particularly like something I can still learn and inspire from it. Even if its as simple as what I would have done differently. It’s so hard to pin down my favorite designers and artists because the more you dig and research the more you find. Its a big world out there.

5. What are some of your favorite pastimes?

I’ve been drawing since I could hold a crayon. I drew all the time. I drew on everything — on tabletops, garage doors, on the soles of my shoes, on the tops of my sister’s shoes — on the trunk of my Dad’s restored ’67 Pontiac. I wore my action hero underwear backwards so I could see Batman, Hulk, and Ninja Turtles on the front when I looked in the mirror. I drew them on rolls of butcher paper my folks provided — for once staying inside the lines.

Besides art riding my bike long distances, writing, reading a good book, and trying new things. I am in the process of starting a screen-printing business and dog walking company. Pushing myself in new directions is a must.

Fresh Finds II

September 7, 2015

Hello! I am sure you all agree that sleeping in on a Monday is the best thing in the world. Thank you Labor Day!

I have been searching for reclaimed/industrial artwork to feature in my bedroom re-design and came across the talented work of Henry Toro from Tulsa, OK. His shop, Modern Textures, specializes in creating custom abstract artwork from reclaimed, up cycled wood scraps, acrylics, and metals. His work is exceptionally well made; I especially love his use of texture, patterns, and colors together with unconventional materials. Here are a few of my favorites, which I would love to add to my wall someday!

Stand Out, But Be Yourself…

August 20, 2015

Happy Friday Eve! Last time I shared with you my vision for a new personal logo to better represent my work. I’m going for a clean, simple, modern layout accented with strong visual elements of texture.

So what makes a strong identity brand? I asked myself the same question and came up with threes points based on my observations of successful branding.

  1. Original

Did you know that many template websites today also include a logo maker? You don’t want your logo to look so generic that it belongs on a template. Allow your logo to have a voice of its own, to represent you and your work in a visual way that people will remember.

  1. Harmony

This is the opposite of chaos and disorganization. Do your business cards look like they belong with your website? What about your resume to your stationary? Even though creating a harmonious system can be very challenging, it’s well worth the extra effort to pull off a strong presentation that speaks quality and refinement.

  1. Refined

The whole point of a personal logo is to brand oneself, but also to easily be identified by others. The best logos are usually the smartest and simplest. This is always easier said than done and demands trial and error refinement to flaunt creativity in a way that others will pause for.

Based on these observations; here are a few artists that I thought really nailed these personal identity systems.

I absolutely adore nautical themed prints, posters, paintings, really just about anything from the ocean. I am left with no choice but to own my own quaint, ocean-sprayed beach house along the coastline. That, or open up a calm chowder house just so I can decorate it.

Recently, I stumbled across the most adorable Etsy shop; I truly believe this shop was been created just for me! If you haven’t already, go check out the fabulous work from Nautical Nell, you won’t regret it.

Here are a few of my favorite prints. These will most likely be shipping to my house in the very near future!

Wanderlust – Part I

August 6, 2015

I have been absolutely nowhere. I have never even left the United States, but that doesn’t mean I can’t start putting together my travel itinerary! As I get older, the stronger the wanderlust seems to creep in. Does that happen to everyone? Here are some spots I’ve had my eye on lately.

The storybook cityscape of Santorini Island is a dream of Mediterranean colors and ocean serenity. You can’t go wrong with terraced architectures contrasted in deep blue and stark white. That alone is reason enough to visit!

You can’t skip over the history-rich city of Athens. Who can bypass famous landmarks like the Acropolis, Parthenon, or the ancient agora! Not to mention, Athens is also known for its trendy shops and bars. Extra bonus!

Just a few hops over lays the beautiful island of Croatia. Specifically, the Game of Thrones filming location of Dubrovnik. Besides nerding out on Game of Thrones selfies, the city itself is breath taking and offers a variety of amazing attractions. Mild climates, mountains cityscapes, hiking, sailing, swimming, shopping and exploring make this location a must-see.

I planned on sharing more fabulous travel spots, but Greece has captured my heart! Stay tuned for more upcoming Wanderlust posts . In the meantime, go out and follow your dreams and inspirations!

Fresh Favorites

August 2, 2015

Hope you all had a great weekend! I wanted to share some fresh finds of absolutely stunning photography and mixed media artwork.

I love the ghostly, vibrant energy surrounding the impressionistic compositions of Riccardo Magherini. I have no idea how the artist gives each image such a painterly quality, but the chilling after tones of captured big city life is awe-inspiring!
