Brainstorming 101

November 27, 2016

Hope you all had a fabulous Thanksgiving! I thoroughly enjoyed mine as it was the first year we celebrated as adult siblings, aka sibsgiving.

With all the extra time off this week, I’ve been thinking more about personal design projects, design contests, photography, freelancing. Although still in the early stages of brainstorming; I’d really like to invest more time into side projects and promoting my own personal brand. I created a visual mood board and keywords to start off but still haven’t landed on any solid brand names. If you have any suggestions, I’d love to hear more ideas :)

This time of year makes me want to update my home decor and accessorize with autumn-hued pillows, evergreen shrubs, extra blankets, cozy imagery etc. You get the idea. It’s essential a form of hibernation I’ve decided.

In my searches for a quick pop of coziness, I came across the adorable Etsy shop Color Zen. Their artwork is created upon order and features a variety of simple, fresh watercolor originals to perk up any gloomy interior. After You, Fall

October 22, 2015
Fall Leaves

Fall is here; change is in the air. Whenever a time of change or transition occurs, even if only seasonal, I immediately feel the need to align myself with its cadence. Searching for inspiration, I stumbled across a few striking quotes with I felt were worth mentioning.

I tried to choose the most personally relevant bit for my image but there a few runner-ups which also deserve a place in this space.

Aim for the moon. If you miss, you may hit a star.
-W. Clement Stone

You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.
-C.S Lewis

Hope you enjoy these as much as I did!

How to Be an Instagram Legend

October 14, 2015

Hey all! I wanted to address a topic that’s been pressing heavily in the back of mind. Almost like a guilty presence haunting my daily interactions – I’m speaking of course of my lack-luster efforts reflected throughout my Instagram account! I know October is classically observed as an acceptable space for hauntings, but I am ready to put an end to my insta-nightmare.

Alright, enough of the theatrics. I wanted to share some tips I’ve recently learned on building up and expanding your Instagram empire.

1 Pick a Pattern:

By this, I mean consciously choosing a theme for your Instagram feed. This could involve a variety of things; dark and moody, texture, minimalism, architecture, color palettes. It’s up to you to decide which direction you want, but remember to stay consistent and view your feed as a bigger picture. Here are some enviable accounts who have owned their theme throughout!

2 Lighting does Matter

Just because your using a phone, doesn’t mean that traditional photography rules need to fly out the window. For starters, begin taking photos during the “golden hour”, the time of day shortly before sunrise or sunset. Being conscious of good lighting will elevate your photography from meh to amazing.

Avoid using the actual Instagram application to take pictures; instead, shoot with your phone’s standard camera in landscape view. Since most phones have decent camera technology, the resolution and overall quality will be much higher than with the condensed processing of the app itself.

3 Better is Better

Long gone are the days of standard filter options; instead, download some decent editing software. Here are few apps that will make life much easier and prettier during editing.

This one is actually free (so no excuses).

This is an OS exclusive but allows for a wide range of editing exposures, angles, not to mention a broad selection of filters.

For 99 cents you and your cam can access new photography heights.

4 Shoot for the Square

This is exactly what it sounds like. Since Instagram is unique for its square formatting, it is important to plan your shoot instead of having to crop back an amazing rectangular shot. To rock a square, it helps to center or pick a focus point which fits clearly within the frame without any threat of cropping. Play with angles, backgrounds, color contrast to help move the eye to a focal point. Here are some more examples of unbelievable artists to drool over.

I hope this was helpful and inspiring, and now I’m off to build my own insta-empire!

Fresh Finds II

September 7, 2015

Hello! I am sure you all agree that sleeping in on a Monday is the best thing in the world. Thank you Labor Day!

I have been searching for reclaimed/industrial artwork to feature in my bedroom re-design and came across the talented work of Henry Toro from Tulsa, OK. His shop, Modern Textures, specializes in creating custom abstract artwork from reclaimed, up cycled wood scraps, acrylics, and metals. His work is exceptionally well made; I especially love his use of texture, patterns, and colors together with unconventional materials. Here are a few of my favorites, which I would love to add to my wall someday!

I absolutely adore nautical themed prints, posters, paintings, really just about anything from the ocean. I am left with no choice but to own my own quaint, ocean-sprayed beach house along the coastline. That, or open up a calm chowder house just so I can decorate it.

Recently, I stumbled across the most adorable Etsy shop; I truly believe this shop was been created just for me! If you haven’t already, go check out the fabulous work from Nautical Nell, you won’t regret it.

Here are a few of my favorite prints. These will most likely be shipping to my house in the very near future!

Wanderlust – Part I

August 6, 2015

I have been absolutely nowhere. I have never even left the United States, but that doesn’t mean I can’t start putting together my travel itinerary! As I get older, the stronger the wanderlust seems to creep in. Does that happen to everyone? Here are some spots I’ve had my eye on lately.

The storybook cityscape of Santorini Island is a dream of Mediterranean colors and ocean serenity. You can’t go wrong with terraced architectures contrasted in deep blue and stark white. That alone is reason enough to visit!

You can’t skip over the history-rich city of Athens. Who can bypass famous landmarks like the Acropolis, Parthenon, or the ancient agora! Not to mention, Athens is also known for its trendy shops and bars. Extra bonus!

Just a few hops over lays the beautiful island of Croatia. Specifically, the Game of Thrones filming location of Dubrovnik. Besides nerding out on Game of Thrones selfies, the city itself is breath taking and offers a variety of amazing attractions. Mild climates, mountains cityscapes, hiking, sailing, swimming, shopping and exploring make this location a must-see.

I planned on sharing more fabulous travel spots, but Greece has captured my heart! Stay tuned for more upcoming Wanderlust posts . In the meantime, go out and follow your dreams and inspirations!

Hope you all had a great weekend! I wanted to share some fresh finds of absolutely stunning photography and mixed media artwork.

I love the ghostly, vibrant energy surrounding the impressionistic compositions of Riccardo Magherini. I have no idea how the artist gives each image such a painterly quality, but the chilling after tones of captured big city life is awe-inspiring!
